A while back I had this idea to do a “behind the scenes” look at Instagram’s ad product. And boy was it interesting. It’s a fascinating read. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. But the reality is, I’ve never been a fan of direct to consumer advertising. Heck, I don’t even like it much now. But I loved it back in the day and that was very exciting to me. It was exciting to see that people were paying for something and that it was coming from people they knew. So this new platform that Instagram is trying to build has got me excited. It’s a novel idea; one that I’ve never been a fan of before. Let’s get started with the basics, shall we? I have never been a fan of direct to consumer advertising before. I’ve never been a fan of direct to consumer advertising in my life. Direct to consumer is great, I get it. But I’m a big believer in blogging and email marketing. And right now, right now, is great for me. I love writing. I love being part of a community. It gives me more leverage with my community. I like being able to give back to people and to show them how I do business, which is what I did with WineLibraryTV and VaynerMedia. And right now, it’s great for me because I can give back to people. I can put out content, get information, and engage. It’s very easy for me to say “Hey Gary, you should check out WineLibraryTV.com” and it’ll go directly to your inbox. I’m not emailing you, I’m emailing the people I want to be part of the e-commerce team at Wine Library. That one little embedded link is what has made me so successful. That one little embedded link is what has allowed me to be so successful. It’s the same strategy that I am still using for WineLibraryTV and WineLibrary.com. I’ve been emailing people for years and years and years and I’m going to get more of that. It’s a great strategy for direct response, it’s a great strategy for organic reach, it’s a great strategy for Facebook advertising, it’s a great strategy for Instagram, it’s a great strategy for Pinterest. It’s all very new to me. I was never a fan of direct to consumer before. I did it for Wine Library TV for a little over a year and a half and it was a complete 180. I was on all these platforms. I was emailing people. Now I’m doing it for Pinterest too. I’ve done it, I feel good about it, it’s going to be a lot easier to do it, and I’ll do it more.
