How to Build a Relationship With Your Boss

If you are constantly talking to your boss (and you do it regularly) you are going to end up not getting to where you need to be. “You want to get the most from your boss? Make him or her happy. The time you’re on the clock in order to build an important relationship is the time you’re going to need to reach the goal. The time it takes to establish an important relationship is what defines your success. The minute you establish an authority to the point where you feel you’re an authority, it becomes very very easy for people to take your side. If they don’t see it immediately, they’re missing out on a HUGE opportunity. This is a huge thing that I really believe in (and why it’s so important to have a strong relationship with your leader before you take actions). It means having a direct line to the top and taking things seriously with the employee on the job. You’re not just talking to another individual. You’re giving them your absolute best in a very real and constructive relationship. The key is that you’re not trying to build your relationship. You’re building your. How can you not? One of my first pieces of advice I gave to a colleague in a board meeting was to tell him that I could not allow him to be the boss of his employee. I’m not talking about the employee you just hired (it’s fine, I’m fine). I’m talking about the individual you hired in the first place. It would’ve been great if you’ve managed to make a couple dozen of them your boss. The reason this is important is that you may think that a company with a few thousand employees has a staff. Now, if you had to give the name to the person working at an enterprise, it would be “The Boss’s Assistant” but it has to be the “Assistant Assistant.” The reason we live in this era of large companies versus smaller companies is that there are a lot of people who might not see your vision or your direction come from your manager. This can be a difficult time. But you have to remember one thing: It came from somewhere; it came from someone who felt confident in their capabilities and in their job. And that is when you know you’ve just crossed the line. If you have a big vision and you want to give it to the employees who work with you, there are several ways that you can ask. The first way is “What would someone else suggest to you? How do I start?” Or “What would have happened if I did not try to do something else?” The solution that I give to you is this: Let your employees ask for it. Not in a conversation, but in their own voice. Let them know that they will be appreciated if they do something. Take responsibility for your boss’s time so that you get more out of your employee’s schedule. Let them know that you’re willing to spend it on them. Do the work that they need done in order to achieve big results. Be generous and let them get it done. They know that your attention is always on the company, they know that everyone gets to see them as the boss. They trust you implicitly. Let them understand that you’re always there with them, and they just need to be let go. Let them know that you’re just there for them, and you’ll see their happiness and get them there. Let them be happy with the process. If you want to go big or go home early, start asking. You have to.
