Writing Running and Reading

Writing, Running, and Reading

I’m on a writing diet.

I’m working my way through my first book (The Lean Startup) and my second (The Startup Revolution) – I’ve been reading a lot more, writing (mostly on the fly) and reading (mostly on the go.)

I’ve also been reading a lot more books. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the go. And, I’ve been reading a lot more than just business books.

I’m not a good reader, so it’s been hard to get into the rhythm of what I read. But I’ll get there. And when I do, I’ll probably write my name in the credits.

I’ve always been a reader first, so as a result, I love to read in any order. That’s been challenging, as I’ve got two preferences – read in random order or random order correlated with something to read.

I started my writing journey in 2009 with a bunch of random reading. I usually have lots of writing sessions and I’ll read things slowly. I’m more of a reading machine person so anything that has a writing component is incredibly interesting to me. I also like to work in chunks, as I like to get a lot of different things to work with.

So, I’m really enjoying the writing practice that I’m doing. I’m writing at least one book a week, occasionally two (sometimes three), and usually four.

I’m also starting to work my way through my reading list. I’ve got a few extra books to catch up on and I’m getting more rhythm from reading with each book.

I’ve also decided to take a long, deep breath and just get started. My goal is to write at least one book a week for the rest of 2013.

For the first time in a while, I feel like I’m starting to pay attention to what I do and don’t do. I’ve always been bad at this, as I’ve always been very analytical about what I read and what I think. I’m trying to shift to being a reader first, a writer second, and a blogger third.

When I reflect on my reading over the past few years, I’ve become a much better writer, a better reader, and a more effective blogger.

I’ve always been good at what I read. I’ve always been a reader first. I’ve always been bad at this. But I’m trying to get better at it.

I’ll be back to being a better writer, better reader, and better blogger in a couple of weeks.
